Ever since humans learned to tell stories, they have expressed themselves in various media. The written word is one of the most powerful of these. But it is only one option among many. Sound and images may be more suited to a particular message — and we often use all three in tandem — but simply telling an audience to “look at the picture” or “listen closely” can shake them out of their complacency. The coverage of these three media — text, image and sound — is something like a pyramid, but not exactly. We may begin with the printed word and follow it with still images — movies — and eventually we may end up with fully immersive virtual imaging. But for many applications we need to combine all three components together at the same time. If you watch a TV screen for half an hour, you’ll see as many as one hundred thousand different pictures flash by as well as several hours of sound. Yet no individual picture lasts more than a fraction of a second because we perceive movement as occurring continuously rather than in jerky steps. The task is not just to duplicate the visual and audio information of a given piece of media, but to present it in such a way that the audience doesn’t notice the gaps. To achieve this, we can follow three basic rules: (a) Don’t rely on the movie-maker. Many people who wanted their pictures or words spoken or their voices heard insisted they be included in movies, believing they would set the tone. But once all those pictures are crammed into a film, it can become a haphazard collage without a discernible structure. It might even become incomprehensible because viewers at home didn’t understand what was going on. (b) Don’t use footage that has already been used before. It would be vainglorious to imagine that the movie mogul who made the last ten movies will create our next blockbuster. So it’s best to avoid using any already-published content, unless you are part of the collaborative process called “interactive media” where contributions are openly discussed and judiciously selected. (c) Don’t be overambitious. If you send real-time video back to certain viewers, they will probably think your computer is about to explode. So you could reduce the bandwidth requirements by streaming videos to a remote audience via the Internet, assuming, of course, they don’t mind getting the same video twice. (d) Don’t attempt to create an interactive experience. Just as it is hectic trying to focus on text in real time, it can be frustrating trying to compose meaningful gestures or enact sound effects at the same time. For this reason, interactivity is often well-suited to virtual reality applications where you can wear headphones and control all aspects of your image independently. Although it is called visualization, people have visualized things for centuries before computers came along.
